With only just over a week until the 31 January 2025 deadline, 5.4 million taxpayers still need to submit and pay their self-assessment tax return to avoid penalties, HMRC has warned.
Anyone required to file a tax return for the 2023/24 tax year who misses the deadline could face an initial £100 late filing penalty.
Some taxpayers wasted no time getting ahead, with over 24,800 people filing their returns on New Year’s Day. Meanwhile, 38,000 taxpayers submitted theirs before the clock struck midnight on 31 December 2024, including 310 filers between 23:00 and 23:59.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, emphasised the importance of filing on time:
“We know completing your tax return isn’t the most exciting New Year’s task, but filing and paying on time helps avoid penalties and interest charges. The quickest and easiest way to do this is through HMRC’s online services – simply visit GOV.UK and search ‘self assessment’ to get started.”
