Upfront Costs Prevent Small Firms from Going Green, Says HMRC

Cheaper energy bills are now the top incentive for small businesses to go green. The report shows 61% of firms see lower costs as the main reason to adopt low-carbon improvements, up from third place in 2021.

Despite growing interest in sustainability, financial barriers remain. Some 38% of firms lack the funds to invest in green tech, and 33% are put off by slow returns. Only 13% feel financially prepared, 18% say they have the right skills, and 26% feel they have enough knowledge.

Half of small businesses (51%) now see sustainability as a key goal, yet just 25% expect to reach net zero by 2050.

This is a concern, as small firms produce 43–53% of the UK’s business emissions. Meanwhile, 64% think the Government should prioritise climate action, highlighting a gap between ambition and available support.
