New Industrial Strategy to Slash Costs and Unlock Growth

The Government has announced a ten-year strategy to remove key barriers facing UK manufacturers, with over 7,000 businesses set to benefit from electricity bill reductions of up to 25% starting in 2027.

At the heart of the plan is the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme, which will lower electricity costs by up to £40/MWh for sectors like automotive, aerospace, and chemicals. These industries, supporting more than 300,000 skilled jobs, will also be exempt from environmental levies such as the Renewables Obligation and Feed-in Tariffs. A consultation will determine final eligibility.

The reforms are part of a broader push to strengthen the UK’s industrial base and create 1.1 million high-quality jobs. As part of this, a new Connections Accelerator Service will launch in late 2025 to fast-track grid access for major investment projects.

To further reduce delays, the Government is also considering new legislative powers to reserve grid capacity for strategically important projects—ensuring faster delivery and greater certainty for high-impact investments.

Taken together, these measures represent a major shift in industrial policy—placing long-term competitiveness, clean energy, and infrastructure at the centre of the UK’s economic future.
